Our Six Days of Creation

Back in my college years, I remember taking a class from Stephen R. Covey. That was when he was a professor at BYU. The text of the class was a book he wrote called "Spiritual Roots of Human Relations." Then later on, while on my mission, my mission president asked that all the missionaries read this very same book. So I came to know and understand it's pages very well.

Chapter 2 in the book called "Six Day of Creation: Process of Growth and Development," helped me to understand my growing process in this life. We, like the creation of the world, are going through a process of creation. (Remember my earlier posts where I spoke of seeing everything through symbols.) Well, this is one of those symbols. This is another reason why the creation process is shown to us in the temple. It is to help us relate to our own creation process.

Our ultimate goal is to develop and grow to the point that we become celestialized. This is the very same process that this earth is going through. It was created, it was baptized by water (The Flood), it will be baptized by fire (Final burning of the earth), it will go through a terrestial time (Spirit World), and then be celestialzed.


Like the earth, our process of creation requires us to go through steps, Day 1, Day 2, and so forth, until we reach Day 6. Each day is taken in succession. There is no jumping ahead and missing a day. As the Lord said "... all things must be done in order." (Mosiah 4:27) Each day is important to our spiritual development.  We are not to run before we can walk. 

Think back to your adolescent years, as you learned to speak, then read, ride a bike, tie your shoe, and so on. It was a progressive learning process. Our spiritual creation process goes through the same steps  - We learned the basics of the Gospel in Primary and from our parents. Our testimony starts off as just a flicker of light, and grows with each witness of the spirit, growing brighter and brighter.

So an important question to ask is what day are you on? How far along do you feel you are in your creation, remembering that when you finalize everything, is when you are crowned with glory and exaltation. It is important to not compare your progress with others, because we each have our own time table and process. What is important to note is that you are constantly moving forward in this process. So assess what day you are on, and what days you are working towards. Keep things in perspective.

Now, you may wonder when you have a major trial in your life, and your faith is tested and shaken, that perhaps maybe you are falling back a little. I think not. It is during those darkest most challenging times in your life that you are actually moving forward. It is the refiner's fire that purifies. Just as with the creation process of the earth, it had to go through the molten lava process, and then a cooling off period. Deep in the earth's crust, under immense pressure, is where diamonds are made. So it is with us. We have our greatest growth when the pressure is most intense.

We should be grateful for this personal process of creation we are going through. It is the only way we can gain all that the Father has. There are no short cuts. There are no tricks. There are no easy paths. Just as the earth went through catastrophic changes, with immense heat, we too must go through these. 

President Gordon B. Hinckley said, "Life is just like an old time rail journey ... delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride."

It is important for us to put our life into perspective, understanding our purpose and living our life to the fullest. For after our 6 days of creation are over, we will have rest on the 7th day with our Lord in his kingdom. And he will say "Well done thy good and faithful servant."
