A Promised Land

In watching the Republican and Democratic National Conventions over the past couple of weeks, it helped me to appreciate the choice and promised land we live in. Sure we have differences and problems, but it is still a land of freedom where it's citizens can worship the way they desire and have an independence for self-development, unlike many countries who suppress their people into mediocracy.

Because of the opportunities I have had to visit many developing countries, and witness first hand the corruption of governments and the poverty of it's people, I have come to appreciate the promise of the Lord to the inhabitants of this continent, that as we keep the commandments we shall prosper in the land, and that this land would be a land of freedom.

To me, in this modern world, it seems amazing that there are still countries that are so far behind in democracy and freedom. Take a look at this chart which shows the countries in blue who have been practicing democracies for more than 40 years. These nations represent a very small percentage of the world's population. There are many more countries in the white that do not grant the freedoms to their people.

However, compared to years past, freedom and democracy are steadily climbing. The war of good versus evil is slowly claiming it's agency and freedoms of choice for many countries. This war which started in our pre-earth life has been going on for a long time.


Our freedoms don't come easy. They were paid for by the blood of our ancestors. This land has been constantly fought over for thousands of years, starting with the Jaredites, through the Nephite and Lamanite years, the war with the British, our civil war and the world wars of the early 20th century. Satan is constantly trying to take away our agency. But in the end, the plan of agency will prevail.

So as I listened to the speeches of the two national conventions, the half truths, the twisted facts and the emotions, I had to smile and realize just how long this battle has been going on over this land of promise.

Having traveled to the four corners of this great country on my motorcycle, I love it in spite of its problems. It is it's people, and the blessings of God poured out upon this country that keep it great. We must do our part, in electing honest and trusted political leaders to keep it great, and to protect our freedoms.

So, be active in this upcoming election. Study the issues. Be willing to voice your opinion about your beliefs. And, of course, make sure you vote.
